Maxwell Stein is an American hornist and educator based in Calgary, Canada. Since 2019, he has served as Assistant Principal, Third Horn with the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra.
Prior to relocating to Canada, Stein held the position of Third Horn with the Lansing Symphony Orchestra and Principal Horn of the Dearborn Symphony Orchestra. He has also appeared as an extra player with the Detroit Symphony Orchestra, Toledo Symphony Orchestra, and the Kalamazoo Symphony.
An active teacher and clinician, Stein has been invited to give masterclasses and residencies at institutions such as the Mount Royal Conservatory, the University of Calgary, Wichita State University, George Mason University, and the University of Lethbridge.
As a performer, he has appeared in venues across North America, including Carnegie Hall and Chicago’s Symphony Center. Stein has also shared the stage with artists such as Itzhak Perlman, Joshua Bell, James Ehnes, Emanuel Ax, Christine Goerke, and Bernadette Peters.
He holds a Bachelor of Music from the University of Michigan, where he studied with Adam Unsworth and Bryan Kennedy, and pursued graduate studies at the Shepherd School of Music at Rice University with William VerMeulen.
