Praised for her expressive artistry and luminous sound, Jeongah Choi brings both elegance and vitality to the concert stage. A native of Seoul, South Korea, she currently serves as a section first violinist with the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra, a position she assumed in 2024 following her position as a section second violinist with Sinfonia Toronto.
Ms. Choi’s musical journey has taken her from Seoul to Vancouver, New York and Toronto, shaped by an inspiring lineage of pedagogues and mentors. She earned her Artist Diploma from the Glenn Gould School of The Royal Conservatory of Music, studying with Barry Shiffman, Erica Raum, and Mayumi Seiler. She holds a Master of Music degree from The Juilliard School, where she worked closely with Hyo Kang and Joel Smirnoff, and a Bachelor of Music degree from the University of British Columbia, under Corey Cerovsek and Jasper Wood. She remains deeply grateful for their guidance, which continues to inform her artistic voice.
An avid champion of contemporary music, Ms. Choi has brought to life numerous new works, including Toys for piano and violin by Adam Zolty, String Quartet No. 3 by Elizabeth Maconchy, and Silymabum for String Quartet by Sylvie Bodorová. She approaches modern repertoire with the same passion and sensitivity that define her interpretations of the classical canon—illuminating every performance with clarity, color, and emotional depth.
Whether performing in orchestral settings or chamber collaborations, Ms. Choi’s playing reflects a deep commitment to communication through music—merging precision, imagination, and heart.
