Born in Peru and raised in Oregon, cellist Karen Youngquist began playing the cello at age ten through her school’s music program. After earning a B.Mus. from the University of Oregon and an M.Mus. from the University of Michigan, Karen joined the Calgary Philharmonic in 1976.
In addition to her long tenure with the CPO, Karen has taught cello, chamber music and orchestral ensemble to students of the Mount Royal College Conservatory and the Suzuki Talent Education Society. She has performed with various summer music festivals, including the Canary Island Opera Festival, the Banff Festival of Arts, the Oregon Coast and Bach Music festivals in Oregon, and, in addition to a wide range of free-lance work over the years in Alberta, has enjoyed a long association with Calgary’s Allegra String Quartet, providing musical backdrops to formal and social events of all kinds.
