What you need to know about this programme:
• Violinist Arabella Steinbacher has made a name for herself by fiercely advocating for cutting-edge composers. Her “breathtaking virtuosity” shines in Britten’s complex and profound Violin Concerto, considered one of the century’s finest.
• Britten started writing this concerto in England, but completed it in Quebec. The darkness of the concerto may reflect his feelings on the Spanish civil conflict and the Second World War. Britten relocated to North America as a result.
• Arvo Pärt’s beautiful, soulful style has made him one of the most performed living composers. This Cantus, an achingly beautiful tribute to Britten, is one of his most popular works.
• Jean Sibelius was motivated by the sun and good weather in Spain to write his masterful second symphony. The majestic themes and heroic spirit made this the most popular of his 7 symphonies.
