May this Lunar New Year bring you good fortune, prosperity, and best of all, a wealth of music! This programme showcases East Asia’s leading contemporary composers and musicians, innovative orchestral arrangements of traditional Chinese folk songs, and features the Butterfly Lovers’ Violin Concerto and Academy Award-winning Tan Dun’s thrilling YouTube-commissioned Internet Symphony. Come early for a Lion Dance presentation as well as a performance by Jessica Yuen’s Musesica Trio at 6:30PM in the Lobby.
Saturday’s performance is co-hosted with the Consulate-General of the People’s Republic of China in Calgary and will feature the traditional Lion Dance during intermission.

Interesting facts about this concert:
• The Butterfly Lovers’ Violin Concerto tells a story that dates to the Jin Dynasty of China (265–420 A.D.) The solo violin symbolizes the story’s protagonist, and the solo cello portrays her lover.
• In 2008, Google and YouTube commissioned Tan Dun to compose the Internet Symphony: Eroica for the Youtube Symphony Orchestra Project. It culminated in a performance at Carnegie Hall in 2009. More than 22 million people from 200 countries have tuned in to experience this global music community.
• Huang Ruo has been lauded by the New Yorker as “one of the world’s leading young composers.” His Folk Songs for Orchestra draws inspiration from Chinese ancient and folk music, rock, jazz and more.
