Internationally acclaimed in both the symphonic and operatic repertoires, Justin Brown is General Music Director of the Badisches Staatstheater in Karlsruhe, Germany, and Music Director Laureate of the Alabama Symphony Orchestra in the United States. He has also appeared with the symphonies of Cincinnati, Colorado, Dallas, Grand Rapids, Indianapolis, and the Mainly Mozart Festival in San Diego. Worldwide, Mr. Brown has worked with top orchestras in the UK, Europe, South America, Asia, and Australia.
Since becoming music director of the Badisches Staatstheater/Karlsruhe in 2008, he has been recognized for his impressive and daring expansion of the orchestra’s repertoire. Under his leadership, the Staatstheater received the 2012 German Publisher’s Award for innovative programming and commitment to contemporary music.
In six seasons as Music Director of the Alabama Symphony Orchestra, Mr. Brown and the ASO received three first-place ASCAP awards (2010, 2012, 2013), and the John S. Edwards Award for Strongest Commitment to New American Music in 2011. His legacy includes the institution of a composer-in-residence program, as well as the founding of the Alabama Symphony Youth Orchestra.
Born in England, Justin Brown studied at Cambridge University and was a Conducting Fellow at the Tanglewood Music Center, where he worked with Seiji Ozawa and Leonard Bernstein.
