Weaving fantastical stories, mythical moments and themes of enchantment, temptation and transformation — fairytales and legends are a universal form of cultural expression.
From sweet pixie-dust sprinkled folklore to dark brooding fables showcasing the beckoning hand of Lucifer, Music Director Roberto Minczuk and The Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra present an exhilarating and intriguing musical exploration of classical music’s greatest narratives.
This Season’s Festival opens with a sensational double-bill concert – as Ute Lemper, the world’s foremost interpreter of Kurt Weill, makes her Calgary Philharmonic debut in The Seven Deadly Sins. The second half of the program features the Calgary Philharmonic premiere of Philip Glass’ spine-tingling Edgar Allan Poe tale, The Fall of the House of Usher. ACAD provides the stunning visuals.
What’s This?! A Festival of Fairytales & Legends shapeshifts into a Halloween spooktacular when Pumpkin King Jack Skellington joins forces with the Calgary Philharmonic! Experience the thrill of classic animated film Tim Burton’s The Nightmare Before Christmas on the big screen, as Music Director Roberto Minczuk conducts Danny Elfman’s original score.
With a dark twist on classic fairytales and legends, guests will enter an eerie forest as they fall under the evening’s ominous spell. Fashions will be styled by the ladies of STYLEISTA, Brenna Hardy and Phaedra Godchild, and modelled by THE NOBLES and the Calgary Philharmonic’s Associate Conductor ADAM JOHNSON. Delicious libations and temptations prepared by ANEJO, NATIONAL, OIL & VINEGAR and HY’s STEAKHOUSE await to ignite your senses.
What is a fashion show without a show-stopping soundtrack? You’ll hear music compilations created exclusively for the Fairytales & Legends Fashion Gala by the Calgary Philharmonic’s very own Assistant Concertmaster, DONOVAN SEIDLE. Stay until the clock strikes midnight for the spellbinding after-party.
The twisting turns in the pursuit of love set the theme as Yi-Jia Susanne Hou, performs one of China’s most beloved and revered works, the bittersweet Butterfly Lovers. Then, a sparkling theatrical presentation of Mendelssohn’s enchanting A Midsummer Night’s Dream, with its famous Wedding March and playful scherzo.
Faust’s foolhardy dealings with Méphistophélès ensure a singular fate: a one-way ticket to the fiery flames of Hell. Based on Goethe’s enduring poem, Berlioz’s dramatic legend is staged for concert, featuring a spectacular cast of guest soloists, along with the Calgary Philharmonic Chorus and Cantaré Children’s Choir..
The night sky above Canada’s untamed tundra is the star of The Legend of the Northern Lights. This Canadian premiere features ethereal music and shimmering aurora borealis visuals filmed by leading astronomer Dr. José Salgado. The Northern theme is completed with Russia’s Night on Bald Mountain and Norway’s famed Peer Gynt Suite.
This thought-provoking presentation, hosted by art historian Tony Luppino and Calgary Philharmonic Director of Artistic Planning Heather Slater, brings together music and art, featuring singers from Cowtown Opera
Soprano sensation Measha Brueggergosman wraps her gorgeously radiant voice around an inspired selection of ravishing vocal works. And there is no more suitable finale for A Festival of Fairytales & Legends than Rimsky-Korsakov’s colourfully exotic Shéhérazade with its enchanting tales of the Arabian Nights.
