Reason for choosing to become a Business Leader
• I have been a member of Club Wolfgang since inception and am ecstatic to remain engaged with the Club five years later. I truly enjoy being a part of something that brings so many different people together under the banners of music and arts appreciation
A little bit about your background
• My educational background is rooted in finance and accounting and their impact on strategy and performance on a local, national and international level. This had led me to roles in real estate, financial services, project accounting, financial analysis and controllership; with experience in the areas of finance, accounting, strategy and requirements development and implementation, as well as performance measurement and management. Presently, I am the Director of Finance for a Calgary-based manufacturer of custom sand control filtration screens, which have applications in the oil & gas, water well, industrial and environmental industries. I hold a Bachelor of Commerce in International Business (University of Victoria), his Masters of Business Administration (Queen’s) and am also a Certified Management Accountant (CPA, CMA (Alberta)).
What are you passionate about?
• I’m passionate about sports, spending time outdoors with my family & friends, and playing and listening to a wide variety of music. I also passionately volunteer for the Calgary Stampede, HIV Community Link and the CPO.
Mr. Clark obtained his B.Sc. (Biology) from McGill University in Montreal in 1998, and spent the remainder of 1998 and 1999 taking courses at the Canadian Securities Institute in Calgary. In late 1999, he joined the Calgary financial planning firm Waddell & Associates as an intern.
Over the next several years, Mr. Clark worked in all areas of the Waddell enterprise, including personal and corporate tax, financial planning, estate planning, investment management, and the creation and marketing of private placement investment syndicates. In 2006, he became a Fellow of the Canadian Securities Institute. In early 2007, Mr. Clark and Jennifer Hetherington purchased Waddell & Associates from the previous owner and renamed it Clark Hetherington Financial Ltd. Since then, the firm has grown to the point where it manages close to $200 million in assets and has a large tax and financial advisory practice which serves many Canadian business leaders.
Mr. Clark is passionate about giving back to the community. In 2014, he was named as Co-Chair of the Advisory Board of the McGill University Faculty of Science. Also in 2014, he was named to the FundEX Investments National Advisory Council. In addition, he has established scholarships at McGill University in the Faculties of Science and Management, is on the board of the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra Foundation and is one of the founding families of the Calgary Police Foundation.
In 2015, Mr. Clark created the Science Executive Leadership Fund (SELF) Program at McGill University. This innovative program is a collaboration between the Faculties of Science and Management, and allows scientists to receive business training in a structured format.
Mr. Clark is an avid athlete and enjoys skiing, cycling, and running. He races several times a year, including the 5 Peaks Mountain Trail Running Series. He is married to Elaine, and they live in Calgary with their daughters Keiko and Chloe.
